If you like drinking filter coffee, we’d recommend making it yourself instead of relying on an automatic coffee machine. These machines can only bring out about 60% of the flavour potential in the beans, compared to about 90% when hand-brewed the coffee is known well enough. While hand-brewing does take some trial and error initially, as you build up your layers of knowledge, your coffee will soon begin to consistently taste better than a brew made with an automatic coffee machine.
The standard hand-brew method involves using a cone-shaped dripper and filter paper. Your ground coffee goes inside the filter paper which sits inside the dripper, and hot water is poured over the coffee with a kettle. The slow nature of the dripper, the temperature of the water, flow of the pour and timing all work together to extract the coffee’s flavours as the water moves through. This is why it is so important to have full control of your pour by using a high-quality kettle.
The spout of your kettle can make a big difference to your cup, which is why gooseneck kettles are preferred in the coffee community due to their ability to control the water flow. We like the Brewista Artisan kettle as it has an outstanding shape of the spout which makes it easy to control and gives you the option to have fast or slow water flow where needed. Another benefit of this spout shape is its ability to closely reach the coffee bed without knocking the sides of the dripper.
When making filter coffees, we usually break the pour into 4-5 smaller batches. This method helps to control the strength of acidity, sweetness and mouthfeel. The Brewista Artisan kettle has the ability to precisely control each batch and produce a great result, being in its third generation you can be sure of the high quality.
